Summary

This document provides the specification of the Organic.Edunet metadata schema, including properties, XML syntax, usage in Organic.Edunet web portal, Agricultural Learning Repository (AgLR) tool and User Generated Content (UGC) widget. This specification (v3.0) updates the current version (v2.0) that is used by the portal and compatible repository tools.

Requirements for revisions

Alternative language versions of the metadata records

The following scenarios should be supported by the new metadata schema

  • Automatic translation of metadata elements in OE portal.
  • Translation of metadata elements by each content provider either human supported or using automatic translation tools.
  • Translation of metadata elements (Title, Description, Keywords etc) by OE users through UGC

Translation by Content Providers

In this case the alternative language versions of metadata record will be integrated in the same metadata record. This scenario is already supported by the current version of the metadata schema. The only missing information is the collection to which the learning resource belongs to. To store this info the Relation or the Meta-metadata category of LOM could be used.

Translation by users

The re-engineered OE portal will provide the ability to registered users to translate or correct a value of a metadata element. To publish this correction/translation of metadata record a number of steps should be followed. To make it more specific let's consider the following scenario:

  1. The metadata record (http://portal.organic-edunet.eu/index.php?option=com_metavi&loId=lo-f520ef07-af7b-11e1-85ab-eb0db6efd237&lang=english) created by a content provider is translated by a registered user of OE portal to a language that is not supported by the automatic translation mechanism.
  2. The translated metadata record is harvested by the AgLR UGC instance.
  3. Then the content admin of UGC will check the new translated metadata record and will send it to a validator that has the language skills to validate the translation.
  4. After the validation of translation the new metadata record will be stored in the UGC AgLR instance. This will be a metadata repository with all the user generated and corrected metadata records. This collection of metadata records will constitute a new content provider for the OE portal.

To support the above UGC scenario the portal should support views of multiple versions of a metadata record. In addition, the portal should be able to recognize metadata records with different identifiers that point to the same learning object.

Correction of a metadata record

In the re-designed and re-engineered version of OE portal the user will be able to correct an element value of a metadata record. The corrected metadata record should be validated by the content provider before being published on OE portal. More specifically, such scenario will include the following steps:

  1. The UGC system will store the corrected metadata record with a new metadata identifier. The relation to the original metadata record will be identified by the portal using the uri of the learning item.
  2. The UGC system should identify the correction points e.g. Title changed.
  3. The validator and/or author of the original metadata record should be informed about the proposed corrections. An email could be sent by the UGC system to the validator or the support staff of the collection with the details of the correction (corrected points, enricher info). The email will be sent either to the identified repository support desk or to the validator VCARD information.
  4. If the validator/author of the metadata record will accept the correction he will proceed to the correction of the metadata record in his repository tool.
  5. The corrected metadata record will appear on portal at next harvesting time

This scenario is strongly related with the content provider and thus a notification approach like the one described above is more appropriate to ensure sustainability.

Extend content providers' network

In order to support more content providers that have resources relevant to the Organic.Edunet network but not educational metadata there is a need to define a more loose metadata schema at some points.

Metadata rights

In order to allow users to correct and translate metadata records, the intellectual property rights and conditions of use for the metadata records should be defined. The information about the rights of metadata records will be defined in Data Agreement and it will be applied to the whole collection rather than on individual records.

Main changes in this version

In the following table the main changes in this revised version are presented.

Element Revision
1.3 General.language

Changed from mandatory to recommended - it remains mandatory in AgLR or any other compatible repository tool.

Use the ISO Country code [ISO3166] in AgLR. The other 2 options are valid for the federation/portal.

1.6 General.Coverage Changed from recommended to optional only for the federation/portal. Providers that won't provide this info will be harvested. It will be recommended in AgLR or any other compatible repository tool.
1.7 General.Structure
Changed from recommended to optional due to the fact that DC based metadata schemas won't provide this info.
2.3.1 Lifecycle.Contribute.Role

Added the translator value to the LOM v1.0 vocabulary

Add the moderator value to the LOM v1.0 vocabulary

2.3.3 Lifecycle.Contribute.Date Changed from mandatory (if 2.3 used) to recommended
3.1 Meta-Metadata.Identifier Changed from recommended to mandatory
3.2.1 Meta-Metadata.Contribute.Role Added the translator value to the LOM vocabulary. Maybe this extension is not needed since translator can be considered as enricher and validator can be used for translation validation
3.2.3 Meta-Metadata.Contribute.Date Changed from mandatory (if 3.2 recommended element is selected) to recommended
3.4 Meta-Metadata.language
- Added mt prefix in the ISO code in case of automatic translation. This is only for the case that user just requests a non supervised translation of an element value.
- Changed from recommended to mandatory
4.3 Technical.Location

Changed from recommended to mandatory

Can take repeatable values [0...*(10)]

6.1 Rights.Cost
Changed from mandatory to recommended
6.1 Rights.Description
Changed from optional to recommended
7. Relation
This category defines the relationship between this learning object and other learning objects, if any. To define multiple relationships, there may be multiple instances of this category. If there is more than one target learning object, then each target shall have a new relationship instance (Occurence:0...*(100).
7.1 Relation.Kind Expanded the vocabulary with the value "IsTranslationOf" to store the information in case of human translation
9. Classification
This category describes where this learning object falls within a particular classification system. To define multiple classifications, there may be multiple instances of this category (Occurence: 0...*(40).

Usage of elements

Organic.Edunet web portal

In Organic.Edunet web portal the OE elements are used for the retrieval and presentation of learning resources. Emphasis at this version of metadata schema was placed to keep and show to user the information about alternative language versions of a metadata record and the information about a user generated correction and translation. Information about the usage and the display for each metadata element in OE portal is presented in the tables of the section "Definition for the elements".

Agricultural Repository Tool

The AgLR will be the main tool for the management and annotation of learning resources. The OE metadata schema is used to describe the learning resources and it is implemented in the AgLR tool. By default the interface of the tool displays all the recommended elements and the user can go one step further by enriching the metadata records with optional elements. The usage and display options for the AgLR tool for each metadata element are presented in section "Definition for the elements".

User Generated Content Widget

The UGC widget provides the ability to correct, translate and suggest a learning resource. It should implement the new OE metadata schema and it will provide some automatic metadata generation functionalities to facilitate the annotation of the learning resource. The usage and display options for the UGC widget for each metadata element are presented in section "Definition for the elements".

Definitions for the elements

In this section the OE metadata elements are listed and the attributes for each element are described.

Next steps

The following steps are foreseen regarding the metadata schema of Organic.Edunet network

  • further analysis and update of vocabularies used in the schema
  • develop the technical binding of the schema (xsd)
  • update the Ariadne validation service
  • define a metadata schema for the registry of the Organic.Edunet network. Details about the metadata schema that will be used for the Organic.Edunet registry will be soon made available.
